Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the importance of implementing women's reservation for the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in India. In a letter dated April 11 to the floor leaders of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, he called for a collective effort among political parties to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, commonly known as the Women's Reservation Act. This act aims to reserve 33% of Lok Sabha seats for women, increasing the total number of seats to 816, with 273 specifically designated for female representatives. Modi highlighted that the success of any society is linked to women's opportunities for leadership and decision-making. He noted that the act's implementation would infuse new energy into India's democratic institutions and strengthen public trust. The current law stipulates that the reservation will only be enforceable after the 2027 Census and completion of a delimitation exercise, potentially delaying its effect until 2034. Therefore, Modi urged immediate amendments to ensure the quota is in place for the upcoming elections. He emphasized that this is a historic opportunity to enhance women's representation in politics and called for unity among all political factions to achieve this goal.
