The recently announced two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran has brought cautious relief to the Middle East, but it may not lead to lower airfares for travelers. Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), indicated that it could take months for jet fuel supply to stabilize due to disruptions in refining capacity. Major airlines, including Delta, are already facing increased fuel costs, projecting up to $2 billion in additional expenses, and have begun cutting capacity to protect their profit margins. Despite a drop in oil prices following the ceasefire announcement, experts caution that simply restoring crude oil flows will not resolve jet fuel availability issues. Airline stocks saw a rally, with significant gains reported for Qantas Airways, Air New Zealand, and others across global markets. However, Dubai authorities have restricted foreign airlines to one daily flight until at least May 31, 2026, exacerbating operational strains. Consequently, airfares are expected to remain high, with a return ticket from Dubai to Mumbai priced at Dh4,230 (approximately INR 106,507), a sharp increase from Dh730 (approximately INR 18,380) two months ago. Travelers should prepare for elevated prices and potential flight cancellations for the foreseeable future.
