Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and candidate from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, filed her nomination for the 2026 State Assembly elections. During her nomination, she expressed deep concern regarding the deletion of names from the electoral rolls following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Banerjee highlighted that while 32 lakh names have been restored, around 58 lakh names remain unaddressed, with 27.6 lakh cases still under adjudication. She emphasized the right to vote for all citizens and warned that the TMC would seek legal recourse if valid names are not reinstated. Banerjee is set to face a significant challenge from Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, who previously defeated her in the Nandigram constituency in the 2021 elections. The upcoming polling for the 294-member Assembly will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
