In response, the district has implemented an optional recitation of the pledge, affirming its commitment to uphold the law and respect student rights. Superintendent Nolan stated that students are now welcome to recite the pledge if they choose. Attorney Jack Baldacci, representing the Hickey family, expressed satisfaction with the district's compliance, hoping it signals a renewed commitment to civic education for all students. The optional recitation was initially resumed in Maine schools after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
