On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India questioned the Centre about the potential classification of officer cadets discharged due to disabilities as ex-servicemen. This classification would enable them to access job reservations in government and semi-government positions. The court, led by Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, highlighted the need for clarity on this matter, especially as many affected cadets are in their 20s and 30s. The case arose from reports detailing the struggles of these cadets, prompting the court to appoint Senior Advocate Rekha Palli as amicus curiae. Palli suggested several recommendations, including coverage under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) and increased ex gratia benefits. The court has mandated that these recommendations be presented to the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a rehabilitation scheme. The Ministry of Defence is reportedly in the early stages of developing these plans, with the 8th Pay Commission set to review the issue of disability pensions. The court will reconvene on April 27, 2026, to continue deliberations.
