The Indian government has announced a significant increase in the supply of 5kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, doubling the daily quantity available for migrant labourers. This decision comes amid concerns from industries about a potential mass exodus of workers due to LPG shortages in various industrial clusters. Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal informed state chief secretaries that the increased supply will be managed by state food and civil supplies departments, with support from state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs).
As a result of the April 7 order to double the supply, daily sales of 5kg cylinders have surged from approximately 77,000 to 100,000. The 5kg FTL cylinders, which are classified as commercial LPG, are priced at ₹549 in Delhi. To further assist consumers, OMCs have conducted 1,300 awareness camps nationwide to educate people on how to access these cylinders. Since March 23, about 780,000 5kg FTL cylinders have been sold. Consumers need valid ID proof to purchase an FTL cylinder, but no address proof is required.
