The Himachal Pradesh government has allocated ₹14.68 crore under the Gopal Yojana for the fiscal year 2025-26 to support the care of stray and destitute cattle. This funding aims to address the significant challenges posed by stray cattle, which have been damaging crops and impacting farmers' livelihoods. To enhance cattle welfare, the monthly maintenance grant for registered cow shelters has been increased from ₹700 to ₹1,200 per cow, effective from October 1, 2025. This initiative is managed by the Himachal Pradesh Gau Seva Aayog, ensuring better nutrition and healthcare for the animals. The government also plans to allow NGOs and businesses to adopt cow sanctuaries, further promoting cattle welfare. Future measures for stray cattle rehabilitation are included in the state budget for FY27, reflecting the government's commitment to resolving the issue and improving road safety, as many accidents are linked to stray cattle.
