Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Edappadi K Palaniswami (former chief minister and leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party) has sharply criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for its failure to fulfill electoral promises. According to Palaniswami, out of 525 promises made by the DMK, less than 20% have been met, despite the party claiming a 90% achievement rate. He accuses the DMK of creating an environment of lawlessness and corruption, stating that the state has accumulated a debt of ₹5 lakh crore (approximately $600 million USD) over the years, which burdens every citizen with a debt of ₹1.25 lakh (around $1,500 USD).

Palaniswami advocates for a strong alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), emphasizing that cooperation with the central government is essential for implementing welfare schemes. He also highlights the AIADMK's commitment to good governance, promising to address issues such as crime against women, financial assistance for families, and support for education and employment. The AIADMK aims to counteract the DMK's claims of success and present a viable alternative to the electorate, focusing on the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.
