In Ahmedabad, a 75-year-old retired man from Sarkhej has reported losing ₹1.4 crore (approximately $170,000 USD) to a sophisticated digital fraud scheme. The victim received a call on April 2 from an individual impersonating a senior adviser from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, who falsely claimed that a mobile number registered in the man's name was involved in sending obscene videos and making threatening calls. The fraudster warned that unless the situation was resolved, the victim would face arrest. Following this, another caller, posing as a Mumbai cybercrime officer, contacted the victim via WhatsApp, displaying a police logo and claiming that the victim's Aadhaar card was linked to a money-laundering case. The scammers sent forged documents, including fake FIR papers and arrest orders, further intimidating the victim and his wife. Under duress, they liquidated their investments and transferred ₹1.43 crore to a bank account provided by the fraudsters, believing they would get their money back after a supposed Supreme Court review. After communication ceased, the family contacted the bank and the cybercrime helpline for assistance.
