On March 23, 2026, a portion of a cold storage facility in Chandapur, Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh, India, collapsed, resulting in the tragic deaths of four workers. The facility, owned by former minister Ansar Ahmed, has been directed by the labour department to pay ₹61,38,750 (approximately $74,000 USD) in compensation to the families of the deceased. The compensation is calculated under the Employees’ Compensation Act, with amounts varying based on the deceased workers' ages and remaining service periods. Families will receive ₹14,59,800 for Sanoj alias Billar Chaudhary, ₹16,80,000 for Masinder Kumar, ₹16,60,275 for Jyotish Kumar, and ₹13,38,675 for Jagdish Kumar. The families had previously received ₹2 lakh each in financial assistance from both central and state governments. The labour department has noted that if the management fails to comply with the compensation notice, the families may need to file formal cases to initiate legal proceedings for recovery. Compensation for injured workers will be assessed after they recover and submit medical fitness certificates.
