The Punjab home department has granted prosecution sanction against Inderbir Singh, a deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, in connection with two FIRs related to drug and corruption cases from 2022. Inderbir, currently stationed at the Punjab Armed Police headquarters in Jalandhar, is accused of taking bribes from a drug peddler and a sub-inspector. This decision follows a Supreme Court inquiry that found him guilty of dereliction of duty during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit on January 5, 2022, when Modi was stranded due to security lapses. The charges against Inderbir include demanding ₹12 lakh (approximately $14,500 USD) from a drug supplier and extorting ₹23 lakh (approximately $27,500 USD) from a sub-inspector to avoid implicating him in a drug case. The trial had been stalled pending prosecution approval, which has now been granted, allowing the case to proceed in court.
