Madhya Pradesh has begun the process to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the end of 2026, as directed by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. This initiative aligns with similar measures taken by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. During a Cabinet meeting, Yadav instructed the home department to prepare a draft and encouraged ministers to analyze challenges faced in the previous implementations. The UCC aims to create uniform laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance for all citizens, although tribal communities will be exempted from its scope. The UCC remains a contentious issue, as it seeks to replace existing religion-based civil codes that have been in place since India's independence. While the BJP's central leadership supports this move, opposition figures like Congress spokesperson KK Mishra have labeled it a diversion from pressing issues faced by citizens, including farmers and youth. The UCC is part of the BJP's broader ideological agenda, which includes other unfulfilled promises such as the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
