England's government is implementing a significant overhaul of school menus to address rising childhood obesity and dental issues. The new standards will completely ban deep-fried foods and restrict sugary desserts to once a week, requiring them to contain at least 50% fruit. Additionally, unhealthy grab-and-go items like sausage rolls and pizza will be prohibited daily, while sides cooked in fat or oil will be limited to twice a week. These updated guidelines, the first since 2014, aim to enhance fiber intake among students. The reforms will be subject to a nine-week public consultation before a phased introduction in secondary schools. The initiative has received support from key figures, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, and celebrities like Dame Emma Thompson and Jamie Oliver, with opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer also promoting the changes alongside expanded breakfast clubs.
