In a pioneering initiative, the Punjab health department has engaged the Janhit Trust to manage the operations of the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Lehragaga, Punjab, India, starting April 15. This decision comes in response to difficulties in staffing and maintaining emergency services at the facility, which currently operates with only two medical officers instead of the required four. Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized the trust's role in providing better medical facilities, including specialists. The arrangement includes a memorandum of understanding that reserves 220 beds for the Punjab health department in a forthcoming 440-bed hospital linked to a new minority medical college established by the trust. While the trust will manage the CHC as a charitable initiative, it will continue to employ government staff, ensuring that treatment fees align with government rates, ultimately aiming for free public healthcare. The CHC is expected to evolve into an urban health centre to support the medical college's requirements as stipulated by the National Medical Commission.
