Under the national Gyan Bharatam mission, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2025, over 40,000 manuscripts have been identified in Jammu and Kashmir. The Persian Department of Kashmir University is the nodal center for this initiative, which aims to conserve and catalogue rare manuscripts that have been in private possession. Surveys began on March 16 and are expected to continue for at least three months. Among the significant finds is a 16th-century manuscript in Takri script from the Gool Gulabgarh area of Jammu. Most manuscripts are in Persian, followed by Kashmiri, Arabic, Sanskrit, and Punjabi. The project will involve district commissioners deploying officials to gather information about manuscript owners, who will upload details via the Gyan Bharatam application. Experts will then assess and conserve the manuscripts without taking them from their owners. The initiative also aims to involve local imams and municipal workers to encourage public participation. Kashmir University has established digitization and conservation laboratories to support the project, with a goal of cataloguing at least 100,000 manuscripts by its end.
