A committee on 'Reforms in Technical Education' in Karnataka, India, has recommended that no institution should offer more than five computer science-related courses and that total seats in these courses should not exceed 900. This move aims to manage the oversupply of graduates in tech fields and promote other engineering disciplines. The committee, led by former IIIT-B director S Sadagopan, emphasized that merely capping CS seats could lead to a brain drain. Instead, it suggested integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into core streams like mechanical and civil engineering. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, the committee proposed a 17% reduction in overall CS seats, redirecting these to core and AI branches. For new institutions, an initial intake of 60 students per course is recommended, with a maximum of 180 seats after four years. To ensure quality, institutions with over 300 students in a discipline must obtain accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The committee also called for biannual inspections of private universities and surprise visits to uphold educational standards.
