Kismatun, the mother of 23-year-old Faizan, who died following an alleged police assault during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, is pushing for murder charges against two Delhi police officers. Represented by senior advocate Vrinda Grover, Kismatun argued before Special Judge Gaurav Rao that the severity of the assault warrants a murder charge. Faizan, who worked as a butcher, was reportedly beaten by police on February 24, 2020, and died from his injuries two days later. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had initially included murder charges in the FIR but later dropped them in the chargesheet filed in January. Grover emphasized that Faizan's statement about his injuries, made shortly before his death, should be treated as a dying declaration. The accused officers' counsel opposed the motion, citing that the magistrate had already taken cognizance of the chargesheet. The court is set to hear further arguments on May 19.
