Farmers in Dhar and Khargone districts of Madhya Pradesh, India, have reported alarming crop failures of 75-90% in their bitter gourd yields, attributing the losses to substandard seeds supplied by Nunhems India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the German multinational BASF. In response, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has directed local authorities to file an FIR against the company and has imposed a ban on its 'Robusta' bitter gourd seed brand. The complaints indicate that farmers purchased these seeds from nurseries and agricultural service centers in November 2025, but the crops failed to thrive, resulting in shriveled, yellowing fruits that fell prematurely. Minister Chouhan emphasized that this issue extends beyond mere crop failure, representing a significant loss of trust and capital for farmers. The FIR has been lodged under various legal provisions, including the Essential Commodities Act and the Seeds Act. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh Minister Ranjana Baghel has also raised concerns regarding the company's practices, reinforcing the call for accountability and compensation for the affected farmers.
