The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is proposing an extension of the underground tunnel project linking Orange Gate to Girgaum Chowpatty, a change endorsed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Originally planned to end near Wankhede Stadium, the new endpoint will be near the PM Hindu Swimming Bath & Boat Club, commonly known as Mafatlal Swimming Pool. This extension aims to enhance connectivity between the Eastern Freeway and Atal Setu, significantly reducing the travel time from 45 minutes to just 5 minutes. The project, which has a budget of ₹7,500 crore (approximately $900 million USD), requires approval from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), which is expected to review the proposal soon. The MMRDA has indicated that the extension is necessary to manage anticipated traffic congestion at Marine Drive due to increased exit traffic from the tunnel. Future phases of the project may consider expanding lanes and enhancing public access along Marine Drive.
