On Tuesday morning, a 400-tonne crane involved in the construction of Metro Line 2B toppled in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The incident occurred around 4:30 am near the Asian Heart Institute, forcing authorities to close a key arterial road. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the crane was lifting a precast beam when a mechanical failure in one of its lifting booms caused the load to shift abruptly. Basavraj M Bhadragond, director of metro projects at MMRDA, explained that the primary boom's failure transferred the load to a secondary boom, which could not withstand the pressure, leading to the crane's collapse. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The area is currently congested as traffic is being diverted, and a 600-tonne crane has been mobilized to assist in removing the wreckage. Authorities are working diligently to reopen the affected stretch and alleviate congestion, but it may take until the evening for normal traffic flow to resume.
