The Salt Lake City School District is moving forward with a significant renovation of Highland High School, which will also affect a portion of Sugar House Park. District spokesperson Yándary Chatwin announced plans to reclaim half an acre of parkland for additional parking spaces and new tennis courts. This development will lead to the removal of 32 mature trees and the existing horseshoe pits and volleyball court. In response to concerns from The Sugar House Park Authority, the district has agreed to plant two new trees for every tree removed and will maintain them for five years. The district will also compensate the park authority with $97,000 for lost recreational opportunities and an additional $15,000 for lost rental revenue from the Hidden Grove Pavilion during construction. The renovation is part of a larger project funded by a $730 million bond approved by Salt Lake City voters in November 2024, aimed at upgrading both Highland and West high schools, with completion expected by 2030.
