In preparation for the municipal elections on May 10, the Haryana State Election Commission (SEC) has mandated strict adherence to the Haryana Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1989. State Election Commissioner Devinder Singh Kalyan noted that numerous candidates and political parties have been reported for unlawfully placing posters and banners on public and private properties. Under Sections 3 and 3-A of the Act, any form of defacement, including writing or marking on properties visible in public areas, is strictly forbidden. Candidates are required to display their publicity materials only in designated areas identified by local authorities. Violators will be liable for the costs associated with the removal of illegal materials. The SEC has instructed local administrations to act swiftly, ensuring that any illegal materials are removed within 24 hours of a complaint.
