Road safety in Telangana, India, has deteriorated significantly, with reported road accidents increasing from 22,900 in 2023 to 27,300 in 2025, a 20% rise. This alarming trend has resulted in around 7,500 fatalities, averaging nearly 20 deaths per day. The increase in accident figures has been attributed partly to better reporting practices, but officials highlight that overspeeding, wrong-side driving, failure to wear helmets, and driving under the influence of alcohol remain the primary causes. Notably, districts such as Warangal, Nalgonda, and Khammam have recorded the highest death tolls, contrary to the common belief that Hyderabad has the most fatalities. The Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates have also reported a high number of fatal accidents, largely due to the extensive highway network where overspeeding and negligence are prevalent. Road safety experts emphasize that speeding contributes to over 70% of accidents and call for infrastructural improvements alongside enforcement measures. They recommend better road design, clearer signage, and stricter enforcement of speed limits to enhance safety on the roads.
