The Punjab government is taking steps to revive its long-stalled housing initiative for economically weaker sections (EWS) by adopting a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to appoint a transaction adviser, with the tender opening on May 11. This move aims to tackle the persistent shortage of affordable housing for underprivileged communities in Punjab, India. Officials noted that the government has access to nearly 519 acres of land, including parcels held by private builders, which can be utilized for EWS housing. In the first phase, around 75 acres have been earmarked for development. Vikas Garg, the principal secretary of housing and urban development, emphasized that the PPP approach will leverage available land and technical expertise to expedite project execution. The EWS housing plan was initially introduced in 2008 but has seen little progress despite multiple policy revisions over the years. Previous requirements for developers to allocate a percentage of their projects for EWS housing have largely gone unfulfilled, prompting the government to explore new strategies.
