The court issued a notice requiring Gandhi to present his perspective on the matter by April 20, 2024. Justice Subhash Vidyarthi, presiding over the case, noted the importance of allowing both parties to address the court before any decision is made. The petition, filed by S Vignesh Shishir, claims that Gandhi declared himself a British citizen through a UK company, raising questions about his Indian citizenship. The case was initially filed in the Special MP-MLA Court in Rae Bareli but was transferred to the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court in December 2025.
