The Panchratna building, located near Opera House in Mumbai, has undergone a significant transformation from a bustling diamond trading hub to a residential complex. Originally built in 1972, the building housed numerous diamond merchants, with 90% of India's diamond deals passing through its premises. However, as diamond traders migrated to the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) in Bandra Kurla Complex and Surat, Gujarat, the building began to repurpose its commercial spaces into homes. As of now, 121 of its 144 flats are occupied by families, reflecting a shift that began in 2011. Real estate prices in the area now range between ₹40,000 to ₹55,000 per square foot. Residents appreciate the building's proximity to essential services and its scenic views of the Arabian Sea. The transition has also improved community dynamics, with long-term residents expressing satisfaction over the enhanced security and neighborhood interactions. Despite the nostalgic ties to its commercial past, many former traders have retained small office spaces in the building, maintaining a connection to its rich history.
