The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) is set to announce that electricity tariffs will remain unchanged for the 2026-27 fiscal year, extending a streak of no increases to seven years. This decision is expected to benefit over 35 million consumers in the state, coinciding with the upcoming assembly elections in early 2027. The commission has indicated that maintaining the status quo is politically advantageous, as any increase in tariffs could be viewed negatively by voters. UPERC's recent assessments have revealed a significant regulatory surplus of over ₹18,500 crore (approximately $2.2 billion USD), which has contributed to the decision not to raise tariffs despite the distribution companies (discoms) reporting cumulative losses exceeding ₹1 lakh crore (approximately $12 billion USD). The surplus has emerged due to stricter expenditure norms and benefits from the Centre's UDAY scheme, which transferred a substantial amount of discom debt to the state. However, discoms have contested this approach, and ongoing legal challenges regarding tariff orders may influence future decisions. For now, consumers in Uttar Pradesh can expect stability in their electricity bills as the state maintains its unique position of not increasing tariffs for an extended period.
