An official delegation from India is scheduled to visit Washington next week for critical trade talks with US authorities. This meeting comes after the two countries finalized a framework for an interim trade agreement in February. However, the timeline for signing the pact has been affected by recent changes in the US tariff landscape following a Supreme Court ruling against former President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs. As a result, the US has imposed a 10% tariff on all countries for 150 days starting February 24, which has altered the competitive advantage India once held. The US Trade Representative (USTR) is also conducting two investigations under Section 301, scrutinizing the trade practices of 60 economies, including India, regarding forced labor imports. These developments have led to the postponement of previous negotiations, emphasizing the importance of next week’s discussions.
