Aegon has finalized a £2 billion sale of its UK business to Standard Life, marking a significant shift in its strategy as it prepares to rebrand and relocate its headquarters to the US under the name Transamerica. The acquisition, which includes £750 million in cash and 181.1 million new shares issued to Aegon, will establish a combined pensions and savings group serving 16 million customers and managing £480 billion in assets. Aegon UK, founded in 1831 in Edinburgh as Scottish Equitable, has 3.7 million customers and employs 2,000 staff. Aegon’s CEO, Lard Friese, emphasized that this transaction aligns with their ambition to become a leading US life insurance and retirement group. Standard Life's CEO, Andy Briggs, noted that this acquisition significantly enhances their position in the UK retirement savings market, aligning with their focus on financial wellbeing.
