Late Friday night, flight operations at Pune International Airport in Maharashtra, India, were disrupted following an incident involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet. The disruption began around 11:15 PM when a fighter aircraft experienced an undercarriage failure during landing, blocking the runway for over 30 minutes. Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke confirmed that the runway would take approximately 4-5 hours to clear and restore normal operations. The IAF stated that the aircrew were safe and no civil property was damaged. Due to the runway closure, several inbound flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Mumbai, Surat, and Mopa in Goa. Passengers reported confusion and delays, with one traveler noting that their flight from Delhi to Pune was diverted to Mumbai. Aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar commented on the challenges posed by Pune's single-runway airport, highlighting the cascading delays and increased fuel consumption for diverted flights. Murlidhar Mohol, the minister of state for civil aviation and Pune MP, assured that he is in contact with airport and Air Force officials to expedite the resolution.
