In Kannur, Kerala, an extortion case has been filed against an online loan application following the tragic death of Nithin Raj R L, a first-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student. The police allege that the app used intimidation tactics to recover a ₹15,000 (approximately $180 USD) loan disbursed at an exorbitant interest rate of 36%, violating local laws. Raj was found critically injured after falling from a building on April 10 and later succumbed to his injuries. The case was registered at the Chakkarakkallu police station based on a complaint from the cyber cell. Additionally, two faculty members from his college have been charged with abetment of suicide and violating the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) Act due to allegations of caste-based harassment. The college management has since dismissed one of the accused faculty members amid student protests. Various state commissions are also investigating the matter.
