The tragic explosion at the Vedanta power plant in Singhitarai village, Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, has claimed 20 lives and left 36 workers injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday when a steel tube carrying high-pressure steam ruptured. Initial reports indicate that four workers died immediately, while others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals. The deceased include individuals from various states, including five from Chhattisgarh and five from West Bengal. In response, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced a compensation package of ₹5 lakh for each deceased's family and ₹50,000 for the injured. Vedanta Power also pledged ₹35 lakh for each deceased worker's family and ₹15 lakh for the injured, along with continued salary support. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the explosion and assess safety protocols. The Opposition Congress party has called for a judicial inquiry and an FIR against the plant management, alleging negligence. The plant, which has a capacity of 1,200 MW, was previously owned by Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd and acquired by Vedanta in 2022.
