On Friday morning, the Income Tax Department searched the residences of two leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party in Kolkata, Debasish Kumar and Kumar Saha, just days before the West Bengal assembly elections scheduled for April 23-29. The searches, which took place at Kumar's residence on Padmapukur Road and Saha's home in South Kolkata, have ignited protests from TMC supporters who claim the raids are politically motivated. TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar criticized the timing, suggesting that the actions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reflect an attempt to misuse federal agencies in the lead-up to the elections. Kumar, who is contesting from the Rashbehari constituency, has previously been questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding an alleged land-grabbing case. In response, BJP leader Rahul Sinha accused Kumar of corruption, claiming that the TMC party is rife with illegal activities. The unfolding events highlight the increasing political tensions in West Bengal as the election date approaches.
