Johnny Somali, known for his provocative online persona, has been sentenced to six months in jail in South Korea after kissing a statue dedicated to victims of wartime sexual slavery. The statue, which symbolizes the suffering of an estimated 200,000 women forced into sexual slavery by Japanese forces during World War II, drew significant outrage due to its historical importance. Somali, whose real name is Ismael Ramsey Khalid, was arrested in November 2024 after posting videos of his actions, which led to multiple charges including public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes. Although prosecutors sought a three-year sentence, the court opted for a shorter term, citing the lack of severe harm to specific victims. However, the court condemned his behavior as motivated by a desire for online profit, disregarding local laws. Following his imprisonment, Somali will face restrictions, including a ban on working with minors and vulnerable groups.
