During a review meeting in Pune, Meghna Bordikar (Maharashtra's Minister of State for Energy) highlighted the urgent need for a long-term plan to meet the rising electricity demand in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. With over 30 lakh electricity consumers in these areas, overloaded power infrastructure has resulted in frequent faults. Bordikar directed the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited to work closely with local municipal corporations and MLAs to plan new substations and power networks. The minister also addressed the issue of high costs associated with underground cabling, which delays projects. Currently, road digging charges in Pimpri-Chinchwad are approximately ₹100 per metre, but officials noted that these costs can be four times higher than the actual cabling expenses. To improve efficiency, Mahavitaran proposed the creation of dedicated underground ducts for easier repairs. The minister urged civic bodies to reserve space for substations in new construction projects and to establish clear rules for these reservations.
