Pune railway station in Maharashtra, India, is set to undergo significant expansion with the construction of six new platforms, addressing the long-standing capacity constraints due to increasing train services and passenger numbers. The railway administration has initiated work on platforms 11 and 12 as part of the first phase, with a total budget of ₹44 crore (approximately $5.3 million USD) approved by the railway board. These platforms are expected to be completed within the next two months. The expansion plan, initially proposing only two new platforms, was revised after a review by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last year, leading to the decision to add six platforms instead. The new platforms will follow an ‘island platform’ design, allowing trains to arrive on both sides and facilitating better crowd management. The project will also enhance passenger amenities, including a 400-metre cover over the platforms, toilets, and drinking water facilities. This expansion aims to alleviate delays caused by the current platform shortage and improve overall service quality at one of the busiest railway stations in the region.
