During a conference on 'Reimagining the Judiciary in the Era of Artificial Intelligence' in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judicial system. He stated that while AI can assist in legal processes, it cannot replace the human conscience essential for justice. Siddaramaiah highlighted the potential benefits of AI, such as faster legal research and improved case management, but warned against algorithmic bias that could undermine equality before the law. He stressed the importance of preserving judicial independence from technological influence, stating that a judge's authority should never be overshadowed by algorithms. The Chief Minister also addressed emerging challenges like AI-generated evidence, which necessitates a re-evaluation of legal doctrines regarding admissibility and authenticity. He called for a regulatory framework guided by constitutional principles and emphasized the need for judges to possess both legal and technological knowledge to navigate the complexities of AI in the justice system. Siddaramaiah's government is committed to enhancing judicial infrastructure and access to justice, including the establishment of a Supreme Court bench in South India to improve accessibility.
