A conman posing as a student from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) in Nagpur, India, has allegedly duped multiple passengers at Mumbai's domestic airport. The scam came to light when Akshay Gawade, a 31-year-old sales manager from Pune, reported losing ₹16,000 (approximately $193 USD) after being approached by the accused shortly after his arrival from Kolkata on March 21. The conman, identified as Nilaboyina Srigiridhara Aditya, claimed he had lost his flight ticket and urgently needed money to travel to Hyderabad. Believing his story, Gawade transferred the money via Google Pay after scanning a QR code provided by the scammer. Upon following up two days later, Gawade found he had been blocked and discovered that the college ID shown by the accused was fake. Further verification with VNIT revealed that no such student was enrolled, and similar complaints had been made by at least three other victims. Airport police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and are currently reviewing CCTV footage and tracing the UPI ID used in the transaction.
