In a significant move, the Vasai-Virar traffic police in Maharashtra, India, have decided to auction 930 impounded vehicles that have been abandoned and obstructing traffic. This decision follows repeated notices sent to vehicle owners, who failed to respond. The initiative addresses growing concerns over road congestion and safety risks, as many of these vehicles have been left unattended for years. Local residents have reported children playing around these vehicles, increasing the potential for accidents and injuries. The police faced challenges in removing these vehicles due to limited storage space, but have now secured a site in Achole to facilitate the process. Senior Police Inspector Prashant Langi confirmed that the department has begun the auction process and is awaiting vehicle appraisals from the Transport Department. Notably, during the compilation of records, authorities discovered that at least 15 vehicles were reported stolen. While efforts to clear abandoned vehicles are underway, the police are still grappling with space issues as more vehicles continue to accumulate from accidents and enforcement actions.
