The ₹9-crore redevelopment project of Butler Palace in Lucknow, India, has come to a standstill after the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) scrapped plans for a heritage-themed book café. This decision was made following objections from various government departments, leading to the halting of all remaining work and locking of the palace gates. The project aimed to transform the site into a cultural hub, featuring a book café, audio-visual galleries, and light-and-sound shows highlighting Awadhi culture. Despite significant public spending, the newly created facilities now remain unused. The LDA had previously announced plans to reopen Butler Palace by April 2026, but the cancellation of the café has raised concerns regarding inter-departmental coordination and accountability. The authority has not clarified whether the project will be revived in a modified form or remain closed indefinitely.
