Chandigarh is set to introduce India's first dumbbell-shaped roundabout at the busy junction outside Sohana gurdwara in August. This innovative design is intended to enhance pedestrian safety, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, who frequently navigate the area. The roundabout will reduce dependence on traffic lights by guiding driver behavior through its engineering-led cues, naturally slowing down vehicles. A dedicated refuge island will be established in the center for pedestrians to cross safely in two stages. The project, initiated by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and proposed by the Punjab Road Safety Committee, is part of a broader initiative to improve traffic management along PR-7 (Airport Road). The construction is expected to take approximately three months, with traffic lights still in use during peak hours to alleviate congestion, especially on religious days. Experts view this intervention as a progressive step towards enhancing road safety and traffic flow in the region.
