The 6-foot-8, 267-pound player began his college basketball career at James Madison University in 2023, where he averaged seven points and 4.3 rebounds over 36 games. After one season, he transferred to Vanderbilt, playing under his former James Madison head coach, Mark Byington, and averaged eight points and 5.7 rebounds in 37 games during the 2024 season. In his final season at Tennessee (2025-26), Carey averaged 7.4 points and six rebounds per game. Following the conclusion of the season, three players have committed to Tennessee: Belmont guard Tyler Lundblade, California guard Dai Dai Ames, and Loyola Chicago forward Miles Rubin.
