The deaths of Gracia Dora (22) and Ariz Shaikh (19) in water tanker accidents in Undri, Pune, have ignited public outrage, with residents linking these tragedies to chronic water scarcity and the reckless operation of tankers in the area. Following the incidents, which occurred within three days of each other, residents organized a protest demanding urgent action from local authorities. They highlighted the long-standing issue of an overhead water tank that has remained non-operational for nearly ten years, forcing over 50 societies to rely on private tankers for water supply. Activists and residents have called for stricter regulations on tanker movement, suggesting that they should only operate during nighttime to mitigate risks. Local officials, including Shweta Sachin Ghule, a corporator, acknowledged the problem and stated that pipeline installation is in progress, which could significantly reduce tanker traffic and associated dangers. The community remains hopeful that connecting a pending 700-meter pipeline will alleviate their dependency on tankers and prevent further tragedies.
