The Congress party has expressed significant apprehension regarding the proposed delimitation exercise that will accompany amendments to the Women’s Reservation Act. During a Congress Working Committee meeting, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the potential for grave consequences, particularly a widening gap between northern and southern India in terms of Lok Sabha and assembly seats. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition, echoed these concerns, stating that a 50% increase in seats could lead to regional disparities. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy presented data indicating that southern states would be adversely affected by these changes. Kharge emphasized the need for a collective opposition strategy, criticizing the government's haste in pushing the amendments as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Despite these concerns, some Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, advocated for supporting the women’s reservation amendments, reflecting the party's internal conflict. The government plans to introduce two bills during the upcoming budget session, which will include the delimitation commission and the women’s reservation act amendments.
