The Uttar Pradesh government is poised to provide over ₹400 crore (approximately $48 million USD) in long-pending honorarium dues to nearly 100,000 former Shiksha Preraks, who served as education motivators under the Saakshar Bharat Mission. These individuals have been awaiting payment since the scheme was discontinued in March 2018. Anil Bhushan Chaturvedi, the director of the literacy department, has instructed officials across 60 districts to verify records and submit data on eligible individuals within 15 days. The Saakshar Bharat Mission, launched in 2009-10, aimed to enhance literacy, deploying 99,482 Shiksha Preraks across 49,921 Lok Shiksha Kendras. Many of these motivators have not received honorarium for extended periods, with some in Prayagraj district waiting for payment for 38 months. The situation has led to legal actions, with over 100 motivators from Mirzapur seeking redress in court. This development is seen as a crucial step towards restoring dignity and financial stability for the affected individuals.
