A recent report by the non-profit Janaagraha highlights that government-run agencies are responsible for nearly 80% of public spending in Bengaluru, while the city administration contributes only 20%. The total public expenditure for the fiscal year 2021-22 was around ₹38,455 crore (approximately $4.6 billion USD), equating to about ₹100 crore (roughly $12 million USD) per day. The analysis, based on over 70 documents from more than 13 public authorities, indicates that essential services such as water supply, electricity, and public transport are primarily managed by government-controlled agencies like the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Despite the significant funds involved, transparency is lacking, as only three of the twelve agencies are mandated by law to publish financial information, with agencies disclosing just 34% of their financial data. Janaagraha's CEO, Srikanth Viswanathan, emphasized the need for better public accountability and suggested the creation of a public dashboard to provide citizens with a clearer view of how public money is utilized across different agencies.
