In a recent letter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that Indian democracy would be significantly strengthened if the 2029 Lok Sabha and state assembly elections are conducted with women's reservation fully implemented. He highlighted the need for the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' amendments to be passed during the special sittings of Parliament starting on April 16, 2024. The Women's Reservation Act, passed in September 2023, mandates that one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies be reserved for women. If the amendments are approved, the number of Lok Sabha seats will increase to 816, with 273 reserved for women. Without these amendments, the reservation would not take effect until 2034 due to its dependency on the completion of the delimitation exercise following the 2027 Census. Modi urged women across India to rally support for this historic legislative change.
