The wheat procurement process in the Doaba region of Punjab, India, which began on April 1, is facing delays, with minimal arrivals at grain markets. Jalandhar district has reported only 300 metric tonnes of wheat reaching procurement centers, while Kapurthala has seen 1,700 metric tonnes. Procurement has not yet started in Hoshiarpur and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts. Experts predict that the arrival process will gain momentum after April 15, as harvesting has been delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. In 2025, procurement agencies managed to procure 13.84 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from the region, and they aim for 14.50 lakh metric tonnes this year. Jalandhar’s district food and supply controller, Narinder Singh, confirmed that arrangements are in place for a smooth procurement season. Meanwhile, farmers have been advised to bring only dry yield to avoid issues related to moisture content, which has been affected by recent heavy rainfall.
