The Punjab government's recent decision to remove the moral science subject 'Welcome Life' from classes 11 and 12 in Ludhiana has shifted focus towards enhancing computer science education. Following a directive from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), computer science will now receive two theory periods and three practical periods weekly, replacing the time previously allocated to 'Welcome Life', which had been part of the curriculum for nearly five years. This change not only increases instructional time but also ensures that students' marks in computer science will directly impact their final examination results, making the subject more academically significant. Vishwakirat Kahlon, principal of the School of Eminence, emphasized that this shift aims to reinforce the importance of computer science, which is already a compulsory subject up to Class 12. An anonymous school head noted that the removal of 'Welcome Life' may not adversely affect students, suggesting that moral values are better taught through real-life examples rather than textbooks. Deputy District Education Officer Amandeep Singh stated that the reasons behind this curriculum change remain unclear.
