The Delhi government has unveiled a comprehensive ₹22,236 crore ($2.67 billion USD) environmental plan aimed at tackling the city's persistent air and water pollution issues. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced this initiative as part of the 2026-27 'Green Budget', which allocates over 21% of the total state budget of ₹1,03,700 crore ($12.5 billion USD) to environmental projects. A significant change in this budget is the requirement for 17 departments to track their spending against specific green goals, ensuring accountability and transparency in how funds are utilized.
The largest allocation of ₹6,485 crore ($780 million USD) is directed to the Delhi Jal Board for sewage treatment and the clean-up of the Yamuna River, which has been heavily polluted by untreated sewage. Additionally, ₹4,758 crore ($570 million USD) is earmarked for expanding the electric bus fleet and enhancing public transport, while ₹3,350 crore ($400 million USD) is set aside for controlling road dust and improving infrastructure. This holistic approach aims to reduce pollution at its sources rather than relying solely on temporary emergency measures. The success of this ambitious plan will depend on the effective implementation and accountability of the involved departments.
